Water quality data for the Illinois River watershed was presented at the September 28 2023 meeting of the Arkansas, Oklahoma Arkansas River Compact Commission in Cave Springs, Arkansas.The 2023 reports from Oklahoma and Arkansas state agencies show the amount of phosphorus in the Illinois River and its tributaries. Two of the tributaries, Flint Creek and Barren Fork Creek, are designated Oklahoma Scenic Rivers.
Oklahoma's instream phosphorus limit still is not being achieved. Phosphorus levels are many times greater at the Oklahoma border with Arkansas and at Tahlequah, Oklahoma than the Oklahoma phosphorus limit of 0.037 mg/l.
