NSU WATER SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIPS ASSURED
"THANK YOU" FROM STIR'S PRESIDENT

Save the Illinois River, Inc., (STIR) President, Denise Deason announced today that the Illinois River protection organization has surpassed its goal to fund science scholarships at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

Students enrolled in the Freshwater Science Studies program will receive scholarships from the NSU Foundation. STIR members and supporters contributed more than $20,000 to the foundation for the program in 2023 and has pledged more contributions in succeeding years Deason-Toyne said.

“We believe that the science of freshwater quality and quantity is extremely important for the health and safety of Oklahoma’s scenic rivers, for Lake Tenkiller, and for other outstanding waters of the state including Spring Creek,” Deason-Toyne said. “Water is critical as well as controversial. Water, including ground water stored in aquifers beneath the Illinois River watershed, sometimes is the subject of heated debate. However, if we have good science to guide our future decisions and just follow the science, everyone will benefit,” she added.

STIR is a citizen’s coalition formed in 1984 and celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2024. The group’s mission is to protect and preserve the Illinois River, its tributaries, Lake Tenkiller, and watershed aquifers. For more information about STIR, see
