STIR'S MOTION ON SEWAGE PERMITS DENIED
January 19, 2022
Save the Illinois River's motion for a hearing on two wastewater treatment plant permits in Arkansas was rejected today by the Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Division (APC&EC). An APC&EC administrative law judge ruled STIR did not file its request for the hearing on time. Although this outcome to our protest is disappointing, other avenues of relief may be available to us including at the federal level. The U.S. EPA's letter to the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality saying the permits are invalid gives us hope the permits may be rewritten and resubmitted for public comment. We cannot allow going backwards on the Illinois River and Lake Tenkiller water quality protection.
